Many experts say shunning the modernizing Muslim democracy would send negative signal

ISTANBUL -- The last few weeks have been a roller coaster ride for Turkey's European Union aspirations.

On the first day of his visit to this overwhelmingly Muslim nation, Pope Benedict XVI reversed his view that Turkey didn't belong in the EU--a view expressed two years ago when he still was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger--and offered his blessing."
