ISTANBUL: Istanbul's traditional shoemaking district is the warren of streets in Gedikpasa, the area behind the 15th-century Grand Bazaar. The quarter, home to dozens of small factories that mass-produce machine-made shoes, is also the workshop for Hanimefendi, the business of Janet Chisholm, which produces a line of luxury shoes that is reviving the almost forgotten Turkish craft of handmade slippers."
