"Turkish Government on EC's 2006 report

The European Union Commission, on 8 November 2006, issued its Regular Report and the Enlargement Strategy Paper that outlines the expectations of the EU for the future of Turkey-EU relations. In view of what has been reported in the international media concerning the said Report, Turkish Embassy feels it necessary to clarify the position of the Turkish Government as follows:
'Turkey-EU relations have acquired a multi-dimentional character following the opening of accession negotiations last year on 3 October. As Turkish Government's fundamental strategic objective is to be a full member in the European Union, starting accession negotiations has been a historic step."
