ISTANBUL – The European Commission's call for a partial suspension of Turkey's EU negotiations should not pose a serious threat to Ankara's membership bid, but political risks loom as the large Muslim country gears up for 2007 polls.

The EU executive recommended on Wednesday a suspension of talks on eight of the 35 'chapters', or policy areas, into which the accession talks are divided because of Turkey's refusal to open its ports to shipping from EU member state Cyprus. "
