ISTANBUL, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Turkey will cut its land forces by 20 to 30 percent over coming years to make the second biggest army in NATO more efficient, the powerful military's incoming chief said in an interview published on Thursday.

General Yasar Buyukanit told Turkey's Defence and Aerospace magazine that the cuts would be completed in 2014 and were part of a long-standing plan to modernise the armed forces.

' ... the armed forces will be reduced in size without reducing their battle effectiveness,' said Buyukanit, who takes over as chief of general staff at the end of August."
