Terrorism by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) continues to claim lives in Turkey. A recent surge in the PKK's activities is feeding anti-Americanism and nationalist sentiments. Moreover, the PKK's terrorist attacks could drag the Turkish public into a confrontation with Kurdish communities. However the U.S.' reluctance to allow Turkish forces to conduct an operation in northern Iraq, where PKK terrorists have bases, places the Turkish government in a sensitive position in which it's forced to do something to appease popular pressure."
