AYŞE ÖZGÜN
Having been educated in Paris as a surgeon-doctor, my grandfather on my mother's side picked up his family from the former Yugoslavia and moved to Turkey back in the early 1900s.
He traveled all over Turkey to find a spot that would most resemble Priştina and settled in Gönen because at the time he claimed that there was no city as green and lovely as that. The family bought the biggest konak in Gönen, right across the park from the government house and began to live a peaceful and rewarding life. My uncle was sent to be educated at Galatasaray in Istanbul, my mother to the Erenköy Girls' Lycee, my one aunt became a professional nurse in Bandırma while my blond and blue-eyed aunt fell in love with the bachelor public prosecutor of Gönen. (She made me carry their love letters back and forth, so I know, you see.) "
