"EU Raises Barriers to Expansion in Warning to Turkey, Croatia

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- European Union leaders raised new barriers to the entry of countries such as Turkey and Croatia, bowing to public fears that further expansion would push up unemployment and divert subsidies from existing member states.

Two years after 10 mostly ex-communist countries joined the EU, the leaders agreed that further expansion would depend on the bloc's ability to ``absorb'' new countries and not only on whether the countries are ready."
