SOFIA, May 17 (Reuters) - Turkey must immediately step up reform efforts to avoid a confrontation with the European Union when accession talks resume later this year, EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said on Wednesday.

Turkey's bid to join the bloc has caused controversy in many member states and was one of the reasons why French and Dutch voters rejected the new EU constitution last year.

Many EU citizens are sceptical about further expansion after 10 new members joined in May 2004, taking the total to 25, and are worried at the prospect of admitting such a large, relatively poor and mainly Muslim country."
