Can the attack against the Council of State judges be described as a one-off?
There's been stagnation in Turkey-European Union relations. That stagnation is also harming the Justice and Development (AK) Party government's authority, which it's trying to retain by propping itself up against outside forces. Despite this, the AK Party's launch of a debate on the presidency, trusting in its majority in Parliament, has further increased tension in Ankara.
Let's recall the Semdinli incidents ... There was an attempt to link Land Forces Commander Gen. Yasar Buyukanit to them, who's seen as the greatest obstacle to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's presidency.
There was the speech delivered by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer at the War Academy and then Prime Minister Erdogan's response to it, 'They want to prevent the Muslims from being involved in politics' ..."
