"Iran blocks common declarations of women's empowerment conference
The New Anatolian / Ankara
A key intergovernmental conference on women yesterday fell short of a final declaration and contented itself with a 'presidential declaration' when Iran insisted on the inclusion of radical Islamic and anti-U.S. elements in the declaration.
The conference, 'Empowering Women in Public Life,' brought together participants from all over the world for two days to discuss concrete action for gender equality in the political, economic and social fields.
The participants included an Iranian delegation, which surprisingly participated in the conference organized by Turkey under the Greater Middle East Initiative (GME) but, when the time came for final discussions, insisted on wording unacceptable to the other participants."
