"Greek Cypriot vote to set tone for future of Cyprus

Greek Cypriots will vote for a new Parliament on Sunday which, according to recent polls, will reveal strong support for parties which back the policies of President Tassos Papadopoulos, who is widely blamed by the international community for keeping the island divided.

Sunday's elections will be the first election since Greek Cypriots overwhelmingly rejected the UN-backed Annan plan in 2004 even as it was approved by Turkish Cypriots. At that time, Greek Cypriot President Papadopoulos carried out a strong 'No' campaign against the plan, which drew sharp criticism from Turkish Cypriots and the European Union. But despite the ongoing division and lack of a solution, the disapproval didn't prevent the Greek Cypriot administration from becoming an EU member representing the whole island."
