"Turkish basting on the Prairies
CATHRYN ATKINSON
From Saturday's Globe and Mail
It's like a warm dip in the Bosporus in the middle of the Prairies. Winnipeg's first hamam, or Turkish bath, has just opened — rather incongruously — at the historic Fort Garry Hotel as part of its new Ten Spa.
Its origins may lie with centuries-old Anatolian steam baths, but the Hamam at Ten is a modern facility — spotlessly clean, co-ed and very much a public experience. Small groups can book the entire facility, and the hamam has designated male- and female-only times. I visited on a quiet Wednesday, so I had the place and the lone attendant all to myself."
