"Crescent over Germany

By Aliefudien Al-Almany
Abd Rahman and I met at Masjid Mevlana, one of the nearly 50 mosques in the city of Berlin, Germany. Grey-bearded Turks are sitting on the carpet or in the coffee shop next door. Books are sold as well as tapes, prayer rugs, and other everyday items the Muslim heart desires.

My friend gave me a warm and strong handshake and asked me to sit down. He was wearing a turban, wide Kurdish-style pants, and had a long beard -- unusual for a German. “Before I became Muslim I used to play guitar. I had long hair and smoked a lot of marijuana,” Abd Rahman said at the beginning of our conversation. “Now, al-hamdulillah, I am praying five times a day. My wife is Arab and we have two children. Islam completely changed my life.”"
