"Status of women in Turkey: Black or white?
In Short:
The status of women in Turkey remains a moot point on the eve of the International Women's Day, but new figures give rise to cautious optimism.
Brief News:
On the eve of the International Women's Day on 8 March, Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Vladimir Spidla called for a 'deep change of mentality' in Turkey regarding the country's general approach to women.
During his visit to Ankara, which was timed to coincide with the 8 March celebrations, Spidla recognised Turkey's 'huge progress' in legislative areas affecting women's right, but said that women in that country still faced serious problems in terms of discrimination, domestic violence, lack of access to education and illiteracy. He also said that Turkey was still struggling to stem the practice of 'honour killings' (the killing of women by relatives for allegedly disgracing the family)."
