"Turkey, where East and West merge

“What are your thoughts on Turkey?” I’ve asked almost all my friends that recently, since my return from Istanbul. The most common response, after some regurgitated a few grade-school trivia facts, was, “I don’t know. I don’t really have any thoughts about Turkey.”

One friend even admitted that his knowledge of Istanbul was limited to the popular 1990 remake of the song “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” by the band They Might Be Giants. The humorous song, written by Jimmy Kennedy and Nat Simon, famously asks, “Why did Constantinople get the works? That’s nobody’s business but the Turks.”"
