THE LAST time I went to Vokolida, or Bafra as it is now known in Turkish, was three summers ago. It was early evening and some friends and I wanted to swim. The road through the village and down to the sea was flanked by undulating hills peppered with olive trees and shrubs. And beyond the village there was nothing to spoil nature’s perfect design.
The beaches around the village are some of the best on the island, so it has always seemed inevitable that one day the scourge of tourism would extend to this natural paradise. However, the sheer immensity of what is being built at Vokolida is shocking, even to those long since reconciled to the fact that humanity appears quite willing to destroy even the last remnants of beauty. "
