Turkish lawmakers pressed a group of visiting U.S. senators on the issue of the presence of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in neighboring Iraq.
The United States has remained ineffective in the fight against the PKK, opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Onur Öymen reportedly told the delegation, which was led by Sen. John Warner, head of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, at a meeting closed to the press. Following the Sept. 11 attacks, President George W. Bush said they were those against us' and those who were with us.' Turkey was with the United States. How about the United States? Are you on our side or the terrorists' side?"
