Journalists are notoriously prone to describe an event they are writing about as 'a turning point' or 'a crossroads' when, in fact, it is merely a curve in the road.
Nevertheless, the furor over the Danish cartoons about the Prophet Muhammad does have about it the quality of one of those events after which muck will never quite be the same again. This is because what has happened is so multi-faceted and because its consequences potentially are so far-reaching."
