The European Union has agreed a controversial aid package for the Turkish Cypriot community in northern Cyprus, in a decision that has upset Turkey and threatens to complicate further Ankara’s negotiations to join the EU.

The question of Cyprus, which has been split into Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot areas since 1974, is potentially explosive for Turkey’s push for EU membership. The internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government of the south of the island has veto rights over every stage of the process – as do all other EU member states."
