Cyprus Observer-Cyprus Problem in Annan’s hands

"Cyprus Problem in Annan’s hands

Greek Cypriot President, Tassos Papadopoulos, and UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, are to meet in Paris on February 28 to discuss the Cyprus problem. An announcement published by the Greek administration said the meetings are “in order to review and take stock of the situation in Cyprus and to discuss ways to work towards the process of re-uniting the island.” The Cyprus News Agency reported that President Papadopoulos had said he has been in contact with Annan “reiterating our wish and our call for the resumption as soon as possible of the effort for the preparation of talks, so talks can resume at the soonest.” He stated that he and Annan agree that the main issue is that any renewed effort for negotiations must be well prepared. Responding to questions, he said that the Greek Cypriot side has clearly explained its positions to the UN and reminded those present of a relevant UN announcement made after the consultations “thanking our side for stating its positions in detail.”"
