Anger at plan for licences to Turkish Cypriot truckers

"Anger at plan for licences to Turkish Cypriot truckers
By Jacqueline Theodoulou

GREEK Cypriot truck drivers are angry at government plans to provide temporary professional licences to Turkish Cypriot lorry and bus drivers, legalising the circulation of Turkish Cypriot lorries and buses in the free areas.

The deputy head of the Road Transport Department, Patroclos Kythreotis, told the House Communications Committee that these licences would be issued, provided applicants could meet set criteria defined by the Communications’ Minister.

But professional drivers protested against the amendment, saying it would introduce and element of unequal treatment between Greek and Turkish Cypriot professional drivers, effectively allowing unfair competition."
