Turkish Mezzo-soprano Jaklin Çarkçı, who was awarded first prize at the Umberto Giordano International Competition in Foggia, Italy, held in December, told the Anatolia news agency in Rome that it was important for Turkey to take place in cultural and art-related activities in Europe especially during Turkey's accession to the European Union and that opera was the most effective way of promoting Turkey in Europe.
