Turkey is big. It has a huge population, numbering as many as the collective population of the last batch of 10 new members of the European Union. It is a poor country even when compared to the EU average, which was lowered with the new additions. There is a large rural/agricultural segment of the population. And Turks are Muslim and culturally different from Europe."
