IT IS ALL well and good for the President to declare his sincere desire for a resumption of negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem the minute the Secretary-General decides to call the parties back to the table without terms and conditions, but for him to be convincing he has to do more than that. No one knows better than the President himself that the Secretary-general will not launch a new initiative until he has clearly seen that the position of the parties on both sides of the Green Line and the Aegean have narrowed the gap between them, and demonstrated their commitment to diligently negotiating a compromise settlement."
