The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been divided by a UN buffer zone, or green line, since 1974, when ceasefire lines were drawn across approximately 80 kilometres of the island to ease strife between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities. It got its name because a UN officer drew it on a map in green ink."
