Since the start of the bird flu scare in Turkey last October Turkey has, according to official statements, culled more than 1.2 million fowl. We don't think this figure is accurate. We assume the real figure is much higher, given the fact that particularly in rural areas people might have concealed their dead birds and the ones afflicted with the virus they have killed in an attempt to avoid the rest of their fowl becoming stricken and also to protect them from being culled by officials under quarantine regulations."
