Turkey's powerful military has signaled it will not oppose Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan if he runs for president next year, despite the military's concerns over his Islamist past, Radikal newspaper said on Thursday.
Turkey's Parliament, where Erdoğan's center-right Justice and Development Party (AKP) has a large majority, is due to elect a president in May 2007 to replace staunchly secular Ahmet Necdet Sezer. Turkish media have speculated Erdoğan will seek the top job."
