Strengthening dialogue and cooperation between civil society players in the EU and Turkey
is essential for the negotiation process
The promotion of dialogue and cooperation between economic and social interest groups in the UE and Turkey, the involvement of civil society in the negotiation process, and trade union rights were the key themes of the 20th meeting of the EU-Turkey Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) held in Brussels on 28 and 29 November 2005.
The JCC welcomes Turkey’s progress as regards the adoption of the Community acquis and considers Turkey to be a functioning market economy. Mr Olli Rehn, Commissioner for Enlargement, argued that structural reforms in Turkey have been carried out in the political and legal spheres and called for the proper implementation of the reforms adopted in the spirit of shared democratic values, the rule of law and human rights.
Mr Dimitrios Dimitriadis, Vice-President of the EESC, insisted that the cooperation between civil society players in the EU and Turkey must be further improved. The JCC should continue to be an instrument enabling EU economic and social organisations to familiarise themselves with social structures and the economic and social impact of reforms in Turkey."
