Turkey has been a major power in the Eastern Mediterranean sea, and the Middle East, for centuries. Despite the destruction of the Turkish empire after World War I, this dominance remains. The Turkish military has, for half a century, been one of the bulwarks on NATO’s southern front. Turkey’s military is one that faces a multitude of potential operations, including counter-insurgency warfare against Kurdish separatists in southeast Turkey, conflict with Greece over Cyprus (currently divided, and a potential powder keg), and humanitarian operations (such as in the aftermath of the 1999 earthquakes)."
