"Turkish bird flu alert prompts cull

Turkish authorities began slaughtering hundreds of birds as a precaution yesterday after the farm minister confirmed the country's first bird flu case at a turkey farm in a western region.
Military police set up road blocks at the entrance to a village near Balikesir. A two-mile radius was quarantined while a four-mile radius was put under close watch.
Journalists were kept away while vets began destroying poultry at two turkey farms.
The Anatolia news agency reported that authorities had slaughtered 600 out of 2500 turkeys on one farm."
