Turkey's road to Europe has been cleared, with an eleventh hour deal being struck last night to begin membership talks. In Istanbul the news is being welcomed. In this most European of Turkish cities joining the European Union is seen as a logical step.
Newspapers played on the symbolism of the agreement, with the crescent moon of Turkey surrounded by Europe's circle of stars. Down on the boardwalk the locals regard future accession to the bloc with a more wary eye."
