"Clock ticks on Turkish EU entry talks

Emergency talks stalled at 01:00 on Monday morning as time runs out on a 17:00 deadline for the start of Turkey’s EU membership talks.

Europe’s foreign ministers continue talking this morning as Austria insists on an option of partnership for Turkey instead of full EU entry.

French foreign minister Philippe Douste-Blazy seemed to support Austria by stressing that negotiations with Ankara would not automatically lead to full Turkish membership, Le Monde reports.

Spiegel Online suggests that EU diplomats are giving 50/50 odds that talks will start on October 3 as pledged by EU leaders last year."
