ANKARA, Turkey - Just after becoming Turkey‘s leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan flew to Italy, a strong supporter of his nation‘s bid to join the European Union , and joked that Turkish membership should be a 'Catholic wedding' — one that lasts forever.

Joining the EU has been Turkey‘s goal for decades, the realization of the dream of those who built the Western-looking secular Turkish state on the ashes of the Islamic Ottoman Empire. But that dream is becoming increasingly tarnished as it becomes clear that many European don‘t want to accept the huge Muslim country."
