"Turkey to sign UN document on torture prevention

ANKARA (AFX) - Turkey will sign a protocol to a United Nations treaty on the prevention of torture during the UN summit in New York this week, the foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.
The move comes as Turkey prepares to open membership talks with the European Union on Oct 3 after undertaking a series of democracy reforms including the key move of stamping out widespread torture in Turkish prisons and police stations. "
