Still waiting for a balanced history of Cyprus

"Still waiting for a balanced history of Cyprus

Mallinson, William, Cyprus: A Modern History, I. B. Tauris, London, 2005.
Hannay, David, Cyprus: The Search for a Solution, I. B. Tauris, London, 2005.
OVER the years I. B. Tauris has proved to be the foremost publisher of books on the history of Cyprus. The value of its two most recent offerings, however, is mixed.

William Mallinson’s book claims to be “a modern history” of Cyprus, but is really a history of Cyprus from 1950 to the present, thus implying that what transpired before 1950 is not important. It is also diplomatic in focus, neglecting Cyprus’s political, social and cultural past. The approach is anachronistic. It apportions total blame on the existence of the “Cyprus Problem” on the interests of foreign powers and thus focuses on the conspiracy theory of the Cyprus Problem."
