The general atmosphere in the European Union (EU) suggests that the EU membership would be a kind of grant for Turkey. According to this approach, Turkey is a country too big to be digested, too different from the rest of the Europe and a poor country. The French politicians, the German conservatives, the Austrian right, the Dutch left and many other groups think that Turkey's accession to the European Union will bring further problems for the EU and increase the EU members' economic and political burdens. It does not leave any doubt that the coming negotiations of Turkey on 3rd October played a role in France and Holland's ‘no’ responses."
