"Efforts to unlock EU stalemate
By Jean Christou
BRITISH Foreign Minister Jack Straw said yesterday he would convene an emergency EU meeting “if necessary” to resolve the deadlock over Cyprus in the run-up to the start of Turkey’s accession talks.
Straw was speaking in the wake of Wednesday’s EU deadlock on the wording of a counter-declaration to Ankara’s July 29 statement that signing the customs union protocol with the 10 new member states did not mean recognition of Cyprus.
EU permanent representatives have been battling it out this week to find an acceptable compromise, but two days of discussions hit stalemate on Wednesday.
Earlier yesterday, Foreign Minister George Iacovou said: “I expect we will be heading to an emergency session of the general council on external relations on the 26th of this month.”"
