Freedom of movement is now just a political tool

"Freedom of movement is now just a political tool

THE NEWS that the Turkish side is finally to open a crossing point at Zodhia to serve western areas of the island is welcome news that is long overdue.

It’s been more than a year since the Greek Cypriot side first made the proposal to open the crossing as one of eight proposed new checkpoints between the two sides. The Turkish side preferred to open one checkpoint at a time, mainly, they said, because of high policing costs.

It took several more months for agreement to be reached on opening checkpoints at Zodhia and Ledra Street in old Nicosia. Now, finally, Zodhia is set to open at the end of the month, though there is no progress on Ledra Street pending mine and booby trap clearance in the area."
