Leaders of Germany's opposition Christian Democrats said Monday that they do not plan to make their objection to Turkey's membership in the European Union the centerpiece of their bid to unseat Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Schroeder has been outspoken in his support for Turkey's membership in the European bloc, while challenger Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats advocate a lesser "privileged partnership" with the predominantly Muslim country."
