In his follow-up article (Business 8, July 19) Michael Backman back-pedals to focus on corruption as the main issue preventing Turkey's entry into the European Union.
Thankfully, this time he at least underscores his argument with a few economic figures about Turkey's banking crises and infrastructure development.
Unfortunately, by maintaining his tenuous argument about home-grown, fundamentalist suicide bombers in London, Istanbul rip-off merchants and a Turkish-Muslim identity being important barriers to Turkey's further economic integration with its European neighbours, he shows that he has allowed a bad personal experience to interfere with his economic and political analysis.
His viewpoint serves only to reinforce negative stereotypes and deepen prejudices based on ignorance and fear."
