"Talat appeals for peace on invasion anniversary

THE Turkish Cypriot leadership yesterday called on Greek Cypriots to return to negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue, as the north of the island celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Turkish invasion, while Greek Cypriots mourned.
Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat reiterated the readiness of his side to work for a peaceful settlement. “Unity and friendship should be the fate of Turkish and Greek Cypriots, not war, discrimination and hostility. To resolve the Cyprus problem is our mission. We will do our best for this.
“We have extended our hand to Greek Cypriots for peace and we are waiting for them to hold our hand,” he told Turkish Cypriot BRT television.
Talat said both sides needed new approaches and a mature leadership that would protect the whole country and the island’s future in Europe. "
