ANKARA -- Members of Turkey's Constitutional Court have for the first time elected a woman judge to chair the country's top tribunal, the Official Gazette announced on Tuesday.

Tulay Tugcu, 63, a career judge, has been a member of the court since 1999.

She explained her election as an indication of 'how egalitarian, secular and democratic the [predominantly male] members of the Constitutional Court are', in remarks published on Tuesday in the large circulation daily Hurriyet. "
