The UK presidency will press ahead with negotiations on Turkish membership of the European Union, the prime minister has confirmed.

Tony Blair's pledge came after talks in Number 10 with Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Britain appears determined to brush aside concerns in France and some other EU countries about whether Turkey should be offered membership.

Speaking after Wednesday's meeting, Blair said there had been 'extensive discussion' on EU issues."
