UTICA -- In the wake of international acclaim as a 'town that loves refugees,' Utica plans to welcome another group of newcomers to the United States.
Several hundred Meskhetian Turks are expected to come to the area from southwestern Russia, according to Peter Vogelaar, executive director of the Mohawk Valley Resource Center, with up to 40 to arrive before Sept. 1
Three Meskhetian Turk families have already resettled in Utica, Vogelaar said, with the first family having arrived in February. They are among 1,400 resettled nationwide, and resettlement agencies will welcome up to 11,000 by the end of the program. "
