"Turkish EU entry under pressure

Political pressure is growing for a suspension of Turkey’s EU entry as the European Commission prepares to open membership negotiations with Ankara.

French interior minister, and presidential hopeful, Nicolas Sarkozy has urged a freeze on further EU expansion after referendum rejections in France and the Netherlands.

“We have to suspend enlargement at least until the institutions have been modernised. Europe cannot enlarge indefinitely. Europe must have borders,” he said."
