"Keller: The E.U. Is Not Aware Of The Benefits Of Turkish Membership
DENIZLI - Jeremy Keller, Trade Attache at the U.S. Consulate General, has indicated today that the European Union is not aware of the benefits of Turkish membership.
Keller talked on Turkish-U.S. and Turkish-EU relations at a conference on Anatolia-U.S. Bridge Meetings, and organized at the Denizli Industrial Region by the Turkish-American Business Council (TAEK).
''The EU is having difficulty with its identity. The referendums in France and the Netherlands indicate so. The EU is now busy with its own problems and has ended its interest in problems of individual states for the time being. The EU is not aware of the benefits that Turkish membership would provide. The U.S. supports Turkey's bid to join the EU. Turkish membership in the EU would be beneficial for the U.S. also in terms of quality and standards. If Turkey can conduct successful negotiations and be patient, everything will go smoothly. The 'no' votes in the referendums of France and the Netherlands have to do with the negative feelings of the peoples vis-a-vis their governments. This is a long process. Turkey needs at least 10 years or more in order to join the union,'' told Keller."
