If you live in contemporary Britain, then 'racism' -- any kind of remark or action which implies that racial distinctions are meaningful or that one ethnicity can be in any way inferior to another -- is such a strong taboo that people are terrified of committing it without realizing it. An old friend of mine consulted lawyers after he used the expression 'Too many Indians, not enough chiefs' at work and found that his Indian colleagues had objected to it. He got a dire warning. 'Even if you don't mean it to be racist, if they think it is racist, then according to British law that's what it is.' "
