"UN REFORM: FOCUS - TURKEY IDEAL PERMANENT SECURITY COUNCIL MEMBER SAYS ANALYST

Ankara, 11 April (AKi) - As a modern democracy and economic power which links Europe and Asia and the Christian and Muslim worlds, Turkey would be an ideal permanent member of an enlarged UN Security Council - the United Nations' top decision-making body, a Turkish international relations expert told Adnkronos International (AKI) in an interview.'Turkey welcomes the reform of the United Nations to make it more democratic and representative of the world's changing geopolitics, and to this end welcomes the enlargement of the UN Security Council,' said Sedat Laciner, director of the Ankara-based International Strategic Research Organisation.

Turkey is a part of a 22-nation group - spearheaded by Italy and including Arab league nations, plus many small African and Asian countries - which favours an increase in the number of non-permanent Security Council members and an extension of their mandate."
