The April 24 referendum results stunned many, as it was the Greek Cypriots, not Turkish Cypriots, who turned out to be opponents of the island's reunification. But more than nine months after the referendum, Turkish Cypriots still wait for promises that their isolation will be ended to come true. As for Turkey, it feels the outside pressure somehow growing even more to recognize the Greek Cypriot administration as the Republic of Cyprus in connection with its bid to join the European Union. Furthermore Turkish efforts to resume peace talks face uncertainty because Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos does not want to return to the negotiations."
